The First Accomplishment of Many

Hello readers! Kaya here again to bring you stories from my hectic and sometimes personal life. So this year one of my New Years resolutions was to concentrate more on my career. Surprisingly I didn't pull a 'Kaya' and procrastinate.
Before the school year ended in December, I signed up for a pre law school program and I got in. So I attended the program this week and participated in activities ranging from mock law classes to working on my personal statement. (Note: work on your personal statement at least a year before if you're planning on going to law school or med school.
Anyways, when it came to writing my personal statement, I had a ton of important ideas that I wanted to write and I was so excited to write them. At this end of the day I could only choose one and I did choose one story that meant a lot to me because it spoke a great deal of who I was and my passion.
On Thursday afternoon I stood before a group of 40 people (both faculty and students) to read my personal statement. I am still wondering how I managed to read and tell my story without fainting (honestly I was shaking inside lol). As I finished my last words, I was greeted by a short silence. And then a thunderous applause followed. I blinked back tears and smiled. I was not expecting that. What I also wasn't expecting was a woman to grab my hand and thank me for having the courage to speak out about such a personal event.
I felt a great sense of accomplishment as I sat down and tuned away briefly to wipe away a stray tear. There is this huge feeling of peace one feels when they share a story that is important to them. I felt that yesterday. We all deserve a safe and enabling environment to tell our stories without being judged or looked at differently. Perhaps one day I will share what I wrote in that personal essay. Until then, adieu.
